Matt Hughes headlined UFC 85 in London with a match-up against Thiago Alves with a possible title meeting against Georges St. Pierre on the line. Hughes (43-6-0) is nearing the end of a hall of fame career while Alves (20-4-0) is looking for his first shot at the title. Both fighters are welterweights but Alves could not make weight due to an injured ankle. Huges agreed to take the fight making it a catchweight bout. Alves did everything in his power to impress the crowd and UFC president Dana White by working over the veteran Hughes Saturday night. Alves had a badly sprained right ankle which was heavily taped up. Huges was able to execute his game plan in the first getting Alves on the ground which was seeming to take its toll on the injured fighter. Round two delivered one of the more devastating knockouts of late. Alves was able to keep the fight standing up and he regained momentum and energy. At the 1:02 mark in the second round Alves landed an absolutely crushing knee which rocked Hughes and landed him on the canvas. Alves pounced and landed a few more shots to finish the knockout. “I’ve got one more fight in me. That’s Matt Serra. My wife wants it, I want it, and all these fans want it,” Hughes said post fight. Alves made his title aspirations pretty clear to the fans as well as Dana White in his post fight interview. “I’ve been a good boy, I never choose my opponents, please give me a title shot.” It seems as though a title shot will be in the very near future for Alves which will make for one of the more interesting fights of the year.
