UFC 84 Recap

This past Saturday saw one of the most exciting nights of mixed martial arts in the UFC's history. The sold out MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas was the host for this night of action and excitement. UFC 84 Ill Will would feature an all-star card featuring an intriguing lightweight title fight. This night would also be the final UFC fight for veteran Tito Ortiz. Ortiz may be best known in the national spotlight for his battles against the likes of Chuck Liddell and Ken Shamrock. Ortiz (16-6-1) faced off against Lyoto Machida (13-0-0). The fight showcased both fighters stand-up games with Machida getting the better of Ortiz throughout the fight. The real excitement came when a desperate Ortiz got Machida into an armbar in the closing moments of the fight. Machida escaped and forced the fight into a decision. Machida remained undefeated by easily taking the unanimous decision. The second marquis fight of the night featured two of the UFC's deadliest strikers in Wanderlei Silva (32-8-1) and Keith Jardine (13-5-1). Jardine looked to keep his momentum going after a win against Chuck Liddell back in September 2007. Both fighters promised an early knockout and it was the hard hitting Silva who delivered. Just 36 seconds into the round Silva delivered a devastating bomb which sent Jardine and his mouth piece flying to the canvas. Sliva pouced on Jardine and landed a few more bombs on the already seemingly defeated fighter. This should set up Silva to face the winner of the July 5th fight between Forrest Griffin and Quinton "Rampage" Jackson. The main event featured one of the more intriguing lightweight title fights in UFC history. The former UFC lightweight champion Sean Sherk never lost his title in the ring. Sherk was stripped of his title when he tested positive for nandrolene, a performance enhancing drug. Penn defeated Jens Pulver in a fight to see who would take Sherk's stripped title. This fight would determine who the true lightweight champion of the world was once and for all. Penn executed his game plan to perfection by landing jabs and body shots through the first three rounds of the fight. Penn simply deconstructed Sherk throughout using his longer reach to his advantage against Sherk who had seemingly no game plan for Penn. With 10 seconds in the third round Penn landed a crushing knee that sent Sherk flying into the cage and onto the ground. Penn landed a few more shots on the badly hurt Sherk before the round ended. Sherk could not get up to get to his corner and the fight was stopped giving Penn the win and the lightweight title. Stay tuned to WBUL for more UFC, WEC and championship boxing coverage.
